Whole-Home Rewire in Worcester County, MA
An older Worcester County home still had its original knob-and-tube wiring. We replaced it completely — here is what the project involved and why it mattered.
Knob-and-tube wiring was the standard in American homes from the 1880s through the 1940s. If your home was built before 1950 and has never been rewired, there is a real chance some of that original wiring is still in your walls.
We recently completed a whole-home rewire for a family in Worcester County whose 1928 colonial still had most of its original knob-and-tube system intact. Here is what we found, what we did, and why it mattered.
What Is Knob-and-Tube Wiring?
Knob-and-tube (K&T) wiring uses two separate conductors — a hot wire and a neutral wire — run independently through the framing of a house. Ceramic knobs anchor the wires to joists and studs. Ceramic tubes protect the wires where they pass through wood.
The system worked fine for the electrical loads of the 1920s. But it has several serious limitations by today's standards:
- No ground wire. Modern wiring has three conductors: hot, neutral, and ground. K&T has only two. This means outlets on K&T circuits cannot be properly grounded, which is a shock and fire risk.
- Insulation degrades over time. The cloth and rubber insulation on K&T wiring becomes brittle and cracks with age. Damaged insulation is a leading cause of electrical fires.
- Not rated for modern loads. K&T circuits were designed for 15 amps. Today's kitchens, home offices, and entertainment systems routinely draw far more.
- Insulation contact is dangerous. K&T wiring was designed to be surrounded by air. When insulation was blown into attics and walls over the years — as happened in most older homes — the wiring can overheat.
- Insurance complications. Many homeowners insurance carriers will not insure a home with active K&T wiring, or will charge significantly higher premiums.
What We Found
The homeowners had purchased the house knowing it needed electrical work. A home inspection had flagged K&T wiring in the attic and basement, but the full extent was not clear until we opened walls.
What we found:
- Original K&T wiring on approximately 70% of the circuits
- Cloth insulation that was crumbling in several locations
- Two circuits that had been spliced with modern wire — but improperly, without junction boxes
- A 60-amp fuse panel that had been partially upgraded to a 100-amp breaker panel, but with the old fuse panel still energized and feeding several circuits
- No GFCI protection in the kitchen or bathrooms
The home was functional, but it was not safe.
The Plan
We proposed a complete rewire of the home, including:
- Removal of all K&T wiring
- New 200-amp service entrance and panel
- New circuits throughout the home using modern 12-gauge and 14-gauge copper wire with ground
- AFCI breakers on all bedroom circuits (required by Massachusetts electrical code)
- GFCI protection in all kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor locations
- New outlets and switches throughout
- Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on every level
The Process
A whole-home rewire is a significant project. Here is how we approached it:
Week 1 — Rough-in. Our crew worked through the home room by room, running new wire from the panel location to every outlet, switch, and fixture box. In most rooms, this required opening small sections of drywall to route wire through the walls. We worked carefully to minimize damage and documented every opening for the homeowners' contractor to patch.
Week 2 — Panel and service upgrade. We installed the new 200-amp panel, coordinated with Eversource for the service upgrade, and connected all the new circuits. The old fuse panel was decommissioned and removed.
Week 3 — Devices and trim-out. We installed all new outlets, switches, and cover plates. We also installed the smoke and CO detectors and tested every circuit.
Inspection. The local building inspector reviewed the rough-in before walls were closed and the final installation after trim-out. Both inspections passed.
Total project time: three weeks.
The Result
The homeowners now have a fully modern electrical system with a 200-amp panel, grounded outlets throughout, and code-compliant safety devices on every circuit. Their insurance carrier, which had been requiring an annual inspection due to the K&T wiring, removed the requirement and reduced their premium.

Does Your Home Have Knob-and-Tube Wiring?
If your home was built before 1950, here are signs that K&T wiring may still be present:
- Two-prong (ungrounded) outlets throughout the home
- A fuse box instead of a breaker panel
- Visible ceramic knobs or tubes in the attic or basement
- Cloth-wrapped wires in the basement or crawlspace
- Flickering lights or frequently blown fuses
