EV Charger Installation in Worcester, MA
A Worcester family wanted a Level 2 EV charger in their garage. We installed a dedicated 50-amp circuit and a NEMA 14-50 outlet — here is how it went.
Electric vehicles are becoming more common in Worcester County, and with them comes a question we hear regularly: "Can you install a charger in my garage?" The answer is almost always yes — and the process is simpler than most homeowners expect.
Here is a look at a recent EV charger installation we completed for a family in Worcester.
The Situation
The homeowners had just taken delivery of a new electric SUV. Like most EV owners, they started out using the Level 1 charger that came in the box — the one that plugs into a standard 120-volt outlet. It worked, but it was painfully slow. After a full day of driving, the car needed 18 to 20 hours to fully recharge overnight.
They wanted a Level 2 charger: a 240-volt unit that can fully charge most EVs in four to six hours. Their attached garage had power, but no 240-volt outlet anywhere near where they parked the car.
What a Level 2 Charger Requires
A Level 2 EV charger runs on 240 volts, the same voltage as a clothes dryer or electric range. To install one, you need:
- A dedicated circuit — the charger should not share a circuit with anything else
- The right amperage — most home EV chargers draw 32 to 48 amps; we typically install a 50-amp circuit to allow headroom
- A compatible outlet or hardwired connection — a NEMA 14-50 outlet is the most flexible option, since it works with any Level 2 charger and can be used for other 240-volt equipment in the future
- Enough capacity in your main panel — before we run any wire, we check that your panel can handle the additional load
Our Assessment
We started with a panel check. The home had a 200-amp panel with about 60 amps of available capacity — plenty of room for a 50-amp EV circuit. The panel was located in the basement, directly below the garage, which made routing the new circuit straightforward.
We also confirmed the garage had adequate wall space for the outlet location the homeowners wanted — near the front of the garage, on the driver's side, so the charging cable would reach the car's charge port without stretching across the floor.
The Installation
The job took one day. Here is what we did:
1. Pulled the permit. We filed for an electrical permit with the City of Worcester before starting. This is required for any new circuit installation and protects the homeowner.
2. Ran the circuit. We ran 6-gauge wire from the main panel in the basement, up through the wall, and into the garage. We used metal conduit inside the garage for a clean, protected installation.
3. Installed the outlet. We mounted a weatherproof NEMA 14-50 outlet in a metal box at the homeowner's chosen location, about four feet off the floor.
4. Added the breaker. We installed a 50-amp double-pole breaker in the main panel and connected the new circuit.
5. Tested everything. We verified voltage at the outlet, confirmed the breaker was properly sized, and watched the homeowners plug in their car for the first time.
6. Passed inspection. The Worcester electrical inspector reviewed the work the following week and signed off.
The Result
The homeowners went from 18-hour charge times to about five hours. They now plug in every evening when they get home and wake up to a full battery every morning.

What Does an EV Charger Installation Cost?

- Distance from panel to garage — longer runs require more wire and conduit
- Panel capacity — if your panel is full or undersized, you may need an upgrade first
- Outlet vs. hardwired — a NEMA 14-50 outlet is slightly less expensive than a hardwired charger and more flexible
- Permit fees — these vary by municipality but are typically $50 to $150
