5 Signs Your Electrical Panel Needs Upgrading
Flickering lights, tripped breakers, and warm outlets are more than annoyances — they are warning signs. Here is how to know when your panel is past its prime.
Your electrical panel is the heart of your home's electrical system. It takes power from the utility line and distributes it to every circuit in your house. When it is working properly, you never think about it. When it is not, the warning signs can range from mildly annoying to genuinely dangerous.
Here are five signs that your panel may be due for an upgrade — and what to do about each one.
1. Breakers That Trip Frequently
A breaker that trips once in a while is doing its job. A breaker that trips every time you run the microwave and the coffee maker at the same time is telling you the circuit is undersized for the load you are putting on it.
Older homes were built when households used far less electricity. A 100-amp panel that was perfectly adequate in 1975 is often overwhelmed by today's combination of HVAC systems, home offices, EV chargers, and kitchen appliances.
If you find yourself resetting the same breaker regularly, the fix is not to reset it again — it is to add capacity.
2. Lights That Flicker or Dim When Appliances Turn On
When a large appliance like a refrigerator, air conditioner, or washing machine kicks on, it draws a surge of current. If your lights dim or flicker noticeably at that moment, your panel may not have enough capacity to handle the load without a voltage drop.
Occasional, very brief dimming is normal. Consistent, noticeable dimming every time an appliance cycles on is a sign your electrical system is working harder than it should.
3. You Still Have a Fuse Box
If your home has a fuse box rather than a circuit breaker panel, it is almost certainly time for an upgrade. Fuse boxes were standard in homes built before the 1960s. They are not inherently dangerous, but they have real limitations:
- Fuses must be physically replaced when they blow — you cannot just reset them
- Older fuse boxes often lack the capacity for modern electrical loads
- Many homeowners (and previous owners) have installed oversized fuses as a workaround, which eliminates the protection the fuse is supposed to provide
- Some insurance companies will not cover homes with fuse boxes, or will charge higher premiums
A modern 200-amp breaker panel is a straightforward upgrade that improves safety, adds capacity, and often reduces insurance costs.
4. Your Panel Is Warm, Buzzing, or Has Scorch Marks
Your electrical panel should be cool, quiet, and clean. Any of the following are red flags that warrant an immediate call to a licensed electrician:
- Warmth or heat coming from the panel door or the breakers themselves
- A buzzing, crackling, or humming sound from inside the panel
- Scorch marks, discoloration, or a burning smell around the panel or any breaker
These symptoms can indicate loose connections, overloaded circuits, or a failing breaker — all of which are fire hazards. Do not wait on these.
5. Your Panel Is a Known Problem Brand
Two panel brands have well-documented safety issues and are worth knowing about:
Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok panels were installed in millions of homes from the 1950s through the 1980s. Independent testing has shown that their breakers can fail to trip during an overload, which defeats the entire purpose of a breaker. If your panel says "Federal Pacific" or "Stab-Lok," replacement is strongly recommended.
Zinsco panels (also sold under the GTE-Sylvania name) have a similar problem — the breakers can fuse to the bus bar, making them impossible to turn off and preventing them from tripping under fault conditions.

How Old Is Too Old?
Most electrical panels are designed to last 25–40 years. If your panel is approaching or past that range, a professional inspection is a smart investment even if you are not experiencing obvious problems. Breakers degrade over time, and an aging panel may not respond correctly to a fault even if it looks fine from the outside.
What a Panel Upgrade Involves
A panel upgrade typically means replacing your existing panel with a new 200-amp (or larger) unit, updating the main disconnect, and ensuring all connections meet current Massachusetts electrical code. The work requires a permit, and the job is inspected by the local building department — which is exactly how it should be.
Most panel upgrades can be completed in a single day. The result is a safer home, more capacity for modern loads, and peace of mind that your electrical system is up to the job.
